Chapter 7

The Round-Up

On her drive home, she just couldn’t wait to tell Kenny what she had learned because he would need to do the lion’s share of the investigating. After reviewing his responses by text, she put the phone on speaker and dialed before pulling out of the parking lot. She listened while the phone rang.

“Hello, beautiful. What can I do for you this evening?”

“It’s more like how much information I can provide for you. Do you have a pen and paper?”

“What if I do you one better and come over for dinner?”

Rebecca thought for a moment. “Just for dinner?” She could hear him sigh over the phone.

“Unfortunately, yes. Want me to pick something up?”

“I can do something easy like sesame noodles if you want something fast so you can get right back to work.”

“Sounds perfect. How long until you’re home?”

“Less than fifteen minutes.”

“Rebecca.” She could hear the judgement in his voice. “Were you good?”

“Always,” she snapped. “I’ll see you in half an hour with dinner. Bye.” She wanted to say she loved him every time they ended a call or said goodbye, but she didn’t think he was there yet.

Upon entering her house, she was immediately attacked with nuzzles and chirrs. She sat on the living room floor after losing the boots and outerwear at the door. “I’m home. It’s late, but I’m home. I can’t wait to snuggle you two more.” She gave extra scratches under Joey’s chin and belly rubs to Bean. The two cats had been there for Rebecca through a lot of her lonely days and nights. Now that she had things taking up time outside of the library, she needed to be aware of how much more they probably needed her love and affection when she was available.

She stood and walked to the cabinet with the wet food, managing to nudge only one head along the way. Once they were eating and still, she changed their water, plugged in her cell phone and put on a pot of water to boil.

Sesame noodles weren’t particularly exciting as a meal, but they were quick and typically required only one refrigerated ingredient which she almost always had. She sliced a few green onions, because she liked making sure there were some in every bite, and prepped the pan with sesame oil and garlic. To save time, she had a jar of organic minced garlic in the fridge in addition to garlic she could chop when time allowed. Tonight, the jar would suffice. The brown sugar, sriracha and soy sauce were measured and waiting on the counter for the ramen. She didn’t get the college ramen anymore, but that would work if she needed it.

Kenny arrived, letting himself in after removing his work boots outside the front door. She’d never asked him to do this, but he always did out of respect for her house. If he ever moved in, what would he do then? Her errant thoughts were put in their place immediately. They’re dating. He has kids and an ex-wife.
